As gas prices climbed, Canadians drove less
Wednesday, November 19, 2008
The Ottawa Citizen -- OTTAWA - Canadians drove their vehicles a lot less during the spring quarter of 2008 than they did a year earlier, likely due to the impact of soaring fuel prices at the time, Statistics Canada reported Tuesday.

And the vehicles they drove tended on average to be more fuel efficient, the federal agency said.

"Fuel prices, which were high and rising throughout the second quarter of 2008, likely played a role in reducing driving," it said, noting that the number of kilometres driven declined 7.1 per cent.

Yes, and in the spring, they could use the other car - the 4WD and trucks were not always needed to plough through the snow,

"z1000: hate to tell you but it is metre everywhere in the world except for the US when measuring distance."

Not quite. In US Engilish, it's meter. In British English (and other commonwealth countries like Canada and Australia) it's metre. Other places in the world it's whatever their language specifies (Germany: meter). This is why the BIPM does not specify language for SI (the modern metric system) only symbols. It's m the world round for meter. Here in the U.S., NIST specifies the spellings for SI but dictates that we use the international symbols such as m, km, kg, l, etc.

BTW, did you know that the U.S. is officially a metric country? Have been so since 1893. All non-metric measures have been based on metric ones since then. The official definition of an inch is 25.4 mm.
